Today is Canada Day! A federal holiday for all Canadians celebrating the anniversary of July 1, 1867 and the enactment of the Constitution Act which joined the British North American colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada into a federation of four provinces. I’m not Canadian myself, but my dog is half British (Cavalier King Charles spaniel) and I love the maple leaf (my favorite Nike running cap has the red maple leaf.) In honor of my northern neighbors and my future nephew-in-law who is 100% pure Canadian, today’s shout out is for you. (Bonus: it’s also his birthday today!) So yeh, I’m feeling a bit Canadian down south in the tech lands of Silicon Valley where the Canadian Geese have established a gaggle of ex-pats in our local marshy bay lands.
The Palo Alto Baylands Preserve stretches a whopping 1,940 acres and is one of the largest tracts of undisturbed marshland in the San Francisco Bay Area. Phineas, my foraging sidekick cavoodle, and I stumbled upon a colony of them, cackling and spreading their articulated wing tips in flight. I’ve been told there are Chinese geese here as well, but today we honor the Canadians. Oh Canada!
