As with all great finds in life, they begin with the first small breadcrumb. I met Maybelle Imasa-Stukuls at a calligraphy class sponsered by Bing and Oh Happy Day in San Francisco. I considered myself immensely lucky as it was a first-come-first-serve Instagram offer which filled up in a couple of hours. Since I was already waitlisted for Maybelle’s calligraphy class at the newly opened Makeshift Society in Hayes Valley, San Francisco, I knew my luck had only just begun!
Maybelle’s client list is jaw dropping – Martha Stewart, Chronicle Books, Sunset Magazine, Better Homes & Gardens, Besotted Brand – however, it is her innate eye for the found beauty in an old map, a hand-inked letter and each one of her students that makes her such a winning artist and person. She is passionate about spreading her love for the art of hand lettering. Her classes continue to sell out with wait lists for each. She has developed a unique brand and it’s available to everyone. Check out “Calligraphy in the 21st Century” being taught in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland and Sydney, Australia. Sign up early or you’ll be waiting until the next century! If you prefer trying your hand in the privacy of your home, you can purchase you very own May-Belle kit here.
I discovered only yesterday that Maybelle is also obsessed with botanical posters! Check out her extensive virtual collection here and her own illustrated botanicals here. Did I mention she has twins and a woodworking husband? More reasons to fall in love with the self-branded artist and calligrapher May-Belle.
