“Thread on paper.
Based on the simple happiness at our home where we just had the basics.
Golden memories.”
– Ingrid van den Brand
I’m loving my new find in Dutch artist, Ingrid van den Brand. She combines photography, embroidery, streetcombing, assemblage, salvage, and a wide-eyed exploration of her youth. Ingrid is a natural forager in her daily world and her work is an outgrowth of this curiosity. Upon the passing of both her parents within a short time of one another, Ingrid sifted through the leftover remains of her childhood home, including boxes of fabric and yarns saved by her mother, a dressmaker. As anyone who has lost a parent or loved one quickly discovers; it is the little things that take on the greatest significance. Remnants of fabric or papers allows one to vividly smell the past like elephants sifting through the bones of their ancestors. Ingrid’s series ‘Golden Memories’ resonates with a crisp minimalism and an acute understanding of the fragility of life. Join me in a closer observation of this kindred spirit, Ingrid van den Brand, here. Be sure to bring an open, childlike heart.
