In life, a deeper exploration reveals unexpected surprises. At first glance, the Sheoak (she-oak) or Coast Beefwood looks like a tall wispy pine tree with long, segmented branchlets that resemble pine needles. However, she-oaks are actually flowering plants and those “needles” are leaves. These tiny pine “cones” that carpet the ground around the base of the plant after ripening are a woody fruit. This fruit-bearing plant named the “she-oak” with leaves and fruit that mimic conifer needles and pinecones is neither oak nor pine tree. Mother nature surprises. Appearances can be deceiving, so don’t be hasty. Follow the smallest of breadcrumbs on a trail of exploration and discovery.

[…] Welcome! Please take some time to explore my blog “Following Breadcrumbs.” You will find a collection of botanical still life images created by me. I also feature an artist every Thursday who works in the found and foraged, historical or reclaimed, and whose work is often integrally connected with nature. Fridays are a weekly homage to Instagram where my photo below appears in the first ever crowd-sourced book of Instagram images published by Chronicle Books, THIS IS HAPPENING, Life Through the Lens of Instagram. I hope you will join me in the daily exploration of Following Breadcrumbs. […]
