The California Buckeye or California Horse-chestnut (Aesculus californica) is the only species of buckeye native to California. The bark, leaves and fruit are toxic to humans, wildlife, and livestock. Local native American tribes used the poisonous nut’s glycoside compounds to stun schools of stream fish for easier catching.
